Telemedicine New Initiative at N.C. Cancer Hospital

One of the features in the new N.C. Cancer Hospital is a telemedicine conference center designed to enable real-time collaboration with doctors across the state.
Two conference rooms in the cancer hospital are equipped for telemedicine consultations with additional teleconferencing sites located on and off campus (including one site in the Physicians Office Building, two sites at Carolina Pointe II, and a Telemedicine Center currently under development at the ITS Manning Building).

Live Tumor Board meetings are currently held every week by the Gastrointestinal Oncology team and the Head and Neck Cancer team and the system is officially underway at Wilson Medical Center in Wilson, NC. By the end of this year, the N.C. Cancer Hospital’s telemedicine program is projected to be live at seven sites across the state.
The system’s current capability supports 40 High Definition video sites and 180 Standard Definition video sites, with a goal of exceeding that capacity in the near future. This technology can be used at a physician’s desk through high performance desktop video. It also has the capability to store medical educational content and stream this information out to users live or on demand.
